This is a companion piece to ‘Watchful eyes’ and both paintings were inspired by a visit to the Rijks Museum.
I was walking past a painting by Bartholomew van der Helst when I became aware of a reversal of roles. The subjects in the painting seemed to be observing, perhaps rather lustfully, the visitor to the Museum – or is it my imagination?
