Morattico Hall

£180

William Dering, dancing master and part-time artist painted the portrait of Dr. John de Sequeyra (ca. 1745). Dr. Sequeyra ran the Hospital for the Reception of Idiots, Lunatics and Persons of Disordered Minds in Williamsburg, Virginia, 1773-93. The inkwell and books attest to Sequeyra's learning. Luxuries such as paintings were rare in early colonial settlements. Sequeyra is remembered today largely as an advocate of the tomato in a nealthy diet.

Architecture from 'Morattico', built ca. 1715,
Richmond County, Virginia.
Furnishings in the William and Mary style,
1700-1725, New England and Middle Colonies.
